Yusuf Seedat, known affectionately by friends and colleagues as ‘Tara’, has made a place in the hearts of thousands of people on the African continent, in his active role as PA to the internationally renowned charitable organization, the South African National Zakah Foundation (SANZAF).
Born to a poor family in 1941 in Ophirton – Johannesburg, Seedat was nevertheless blessed with parents who inspired him to become the person he is today. (click here for more) |

Ebrahim Garda, also known as Chicka, is one of Fordsburg’s esteemed personalities. He hails from the heyday of Fietas and is an astute narrator of the area’s history and a storyteller of note. He has wowed us here at fordsburg.com with his memory of minute details and has warmed us with his humility and world knowledge.
He was born on 30 January 1942 to a family of eight brothers and sister. While his brothers showed an avid interest in sport, Ebrahim was more of an intellectual. He attended high school at the Johannesburg Indian High School, where he nurtured a growing interest in international politics.

As we bid farewell to Women’s Month, Fordsburg.com could not resist commemorating another distinguished woman of substance, amongst the many in our community.
When Zohra Isane relinquished her 9-year Directorship of the Johannesburg Institute of Social Services (JISS) in Mayfair, it was with a high degree of satisfaction that she had carried out her responsibilities with dignity, pride and honour.

Fordsburg.com’s Women’s Month recognition goes to Suraya Hassim, founder of The Islamic Relief Fund in Fordsburg which aids poverty-stricken communities throughout Gauteng, and other provinces.
“It was the year 1962 – a woman knocked at my door and said that she has five young children and her husband was killed in a train accident. She needed food but insisted on working for it.”........
