Doling out the Ramadan Delights - Fordsburg Style
This past weekend, stragglers bounding into Fordsburg, intent on whiling away the dwindling day, noted with some curiosity a queue snaking outside Rashid Cassim Sports on Central Road. It was soon clarified - Rashid Cassim had not diversified into the haleem trade but was in fact doing a roaring sportswear trade, such that the store’s humble abode could not admit all its eager patrons at once. Like the waning moon in the night sky, the rapid approach of Eid can be seen in the unavailability of parking at the Plaza, queues outside Rashid Cassim Sports and the incessant busy tone on the Home Made Delights landline - biscuit orders coming in from all over the country.
Fordsburg, eclectic at any time, has its own distinctive Ramadan flavour. All kitchen related activity in these parts uniformly doles out that Ramadan obligation, the savoury. Traditionally, assuming the form of the humble samoosa, today's savoury, all clicked out for the appeal of the bling generation has generated a new variety of food. So the twilight hour of everyday becomes rush hour and Fordsburg’s roads are frenetically packed with hungry, harried people eager to get their brown paper bags’ fill of the day’s delights
